REAL ID-compliant licenses are coming to Oklahoma in 2020 and if you travel, you better head to the DMV quickly! Starting October 1, 2020, every adult traveler over the age of 18 will need this new ID to board commercial flights. An acceptable alternative ID is a passport, however.
The U.S. Travel Association found that only 43% of Americans are even aware of the October deadline. An estimated 78,500 travelers could probably be turned away on the first day of enforcement. If you are one of many people planning a vacation come October 1, 2020, you better have your updated ID or passport with you! If not, you will be watching your family and friends board the flight without you!
This travel requirement is from law back in 2005 regarding identification security standards passed by Congress and suggested by the 9/11 Commission. So what this boils down to is the REAL ID Act prevents federal agencies such as TSA from accepting licenses and IDs from states that don’t meet strict new requirements.
Where to get yours
To get the new ID, pop on over to your local DMV when they offer them (looking like April 2020), preferably before the deadline- to avoid congested lines, and bring the proper identification with you. Usually, this includes a birth certificate, green card, Social Security card, and two other documents that show your address.
As of now, 47 of the 50 states currently issue REAL ID-compliant licenses with the other three following close behind including Oklahoma.
With only 27% of Americans holding a new ID, you don’t want to be left out in the cold while your friends jump on a flight to the Bahamas!
Free shuttles are Fine
On the upside, if you are left behind and parked with Fine Airport Parking, give the free shuttle service a call. We will pick your irresponsible butt back up at the airport and drive you to your vehicle. But for real, we do encourage you to grab your REAL ID before time runs out.
