Chances are you learned the ins and outs of detailing and waxing your vehicle from your father, who in turn, learned from his father, and so on. As much as we respect our parents right to pass down “relics of information” from their childhood, car waxing ain’t what it used to be! Automotive clear coats and paints are definitely different today, so some old information need not apply.
Below, are some common misconceptions about waxing your ride.
Myth 1: You can over-wax your car
If appropriately applied, wax protects the quality and look of your vehicle’s paint. Simply avoid scouring agents, abrasives, and chemical cleaners. Basically, you can’t over-wax- simple as that.
Myth 2: Waxing too much, causes wax build-up
Wax build-up doesn’t mean you are waxing too much – you can’t do that, remember? It’s a sign you’re doing it wrong. Proper application and removal will not leave lingering wax on your vehicle.
Myth 3: You don’t need to wax a new car
The clear coat on your new vehicle is an unpigmented coating that is applied at the factory. While this layer does protect your paint, your ride still has no form of exterior protection. Sorry to disappoint you but new cars must also be waxed as part of your regular maintenance process.
Myth 4: It’s sufficient to wax your car once a year
You should actually be waxing your vehicle four times a year or as often as every three months. The wax protects and preserves the paint from harsh elements and keeping your baby in tip-top shape, will increase the resale value.
Myth 5: You can remove swirl marks by waxing
No matter what your papa thinks, swirl marks are in fact paint damage and need to be polished away. It’s difficult to remove these marks with a hand wax; especially on a clear coat paint finish. Car polisher is required.
Back in the day, you could merely wax the vehicle with a decent cleaner wax, and the polishing substances in that product would then clean, polish and protect all at the same time. This method is no longer applicable to today’s vehicles. Sorry, dad!
